Pipeline repaired as water works continue
Scottish Water says that it is continuing work on restoring water supplies to Graemsay, and that repair work is complete on the subsea pipeline that supplies the island from north Hoy.
A spokesman said this morning: “The focus is now on preparing the water main to bring it back into in service. This includes cleaning and disinfecting the main, then running tests and samples on the pipeline and associated mains network to ensure that the water is consistently meeting regulatory standards for drinking water. This work will take several days to complete. It is possible therefore that it will be next week before the all-clear is given for the water supply.”
Scottish Water also added that it is liaising with the NHS and OIC environmental health department, to ensure that the return to normal water supply is completed in the correct manner.
The utility company added: “Scottish Water’s team for the Orkney Islands are using every resource available to minimise inconvenience to Graemsay residents.
“The transportation of water by boat from Stromness on the Orkney mainland to replenish the water tank on Graemsay will continue, as required, until the water is consistently meeting the required standards.”
Scottish Waters said that precautionary advice previously issued on the use of water on the island should continue to be followed until further notification.
A statement added: “Scottish Water appreciate that this situation must be very inconvenient and distressing for residents on Graemsay. Public health and security of the long-term water supply is the absolute priority.
“Scottish Water aims to lift this precautionary notice as soon as possible, and will provide regular information and advice to islanders in the meantime. Scottish Water apologise for any inconvenience to residents and businesses on Graemsay, and would like to thank them for their continued patience and cooperation.”
