Plans to demolish toilets overturned
OIC councillors have overturned a recommendation to demolish the public toilets at Mayburn Court in Stromness.
In August, the planning and protective services committee declared that – following closure in January 2010 because of vandalism, and to avoid further expenditure – the toilets were surplus to the council’s operational requirements.
A report before the education and leisure committee this week advised the toilets be knocked down, and the land turned into garden ground to be added to the existing Mayburn Court allotments.
However, to avoid the cost of demolishing the building, councillors voted to do nothing.
This, they said, would also allow for any future development that would put the building to good use.
