Power restored following Sanday power cut
A meeting of the Orkney Local Emergency Co-ordinating Group (OLECG) took place yesterday in response to a power cut on Sunday, which should now have been resolved.
Immediately following the meeting, which took place at 5pm yesterday, Wednesday, Kirkwall Police Station’s Inspector Keith Bendall said that just after midday strong winds on the island resulted in damage to an overhead power cable causing power to the entire Island being lost, with 425 homes affected.
The phone lines on Sanday remained active however a fall back service was set up by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, who were available via a radio link to the Orkney mainland, should the need arise. Plans were also put in place to check on vulnerable people within the community.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) is reporting this morning that their engineers restored power to the majority of homes at 8.45pm yesterday, with the power restored to the rest by 11.33pm. Engineers are returning to Sanday this morning to carry out full repairs an, as a result, there will be a temporary interruption to power for some properties on the island later today.
SSEN has apologised to its customers on the island and thanked them for their patience in light of the situation.
