Registration reminder to young voters

Those aged 16 or over – like Orkney’s Anna Mackay and Ria Leslie – will be able to vote for the first time in the Independence Referendum on September 18, 2014.

The county’s young voters are being reminded that they must register to vote in the Scottish independence referendum next year

Households will shortly receive their annual electoral registration form through the post and are being encouraged to return it promptly so they can have their say at next year’s polls.

In 2014, Orkney residents will be able to cast their vote at May’s European elections and at September’s independence referendum.

Anyone who is 16 or over on the September 18, 2014, will be able to vote in the referendum, so every house is also being sent a “young voters” form to register their details.  People completing the registration forms are being urged to make sure the details of any soon-to-be 16 or 17 year olds in their household are included.
