Seabed search for missing cargo ship
The Northern Lighthouse Board vessel Pharos, which was dispatched from Leith yesterday, today begun a search for the sunken wreck of the cement carrier Cemfjord.
A statement from the NLB said that the Pharos arrived in the area at 1am, and work has begun to search for the wreck.
A spokesman said: “Pharos will during the course today verify the wreck’s exact location on the seabed, establish the depth of clear water above the wreck, and determine whether a buoy to mark the wreck is required.”
The statement added: “The ship will remain on location for the moment to assist the MAIB and MCA as required.”
It also explained that the NLB has a statutory role to ensure that wrecks that could be an obstruction to other vessels, and therefore present a danger to safe navigation, are marked.
