Shortlisted for Library of the Year award
Staff from the Orkney Library and Archive are celebrating after being shortlisted for a Library of the Year Award.
They are the only Scottish library in the list announced today by the Bookseller Industry Awards, which brings together the national book trade to celebrate its achievements.
The Library of the Year category aims to find the best library in Britain, to spotlight the individual librarians that make it such a success and to celebrate the vital role that libraries play in encouraging reading.
The other libraries shortlisted are:
- Claude Ramsey Library, Greenwich
- Dudley Libraries
- Exeter Library
- Orkney Library & Archive
- Sunderland City Library Service
- Wigan Library
Gary Amos, Orkney Islands Council’s library and archive manager, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award. Orkney is very proud of its libraries and this provides recognition for this. Thanks to our much-loved Twitter feed, which now has almost 16k followers, we have Orkney library fans all over the world and I am sure they will all be cheering us on. We have an exciting year ahead of us with the opening of the new facility in Stromness and to win this award would be a great accompaniment to that”.
The winners are announced in May.
