Sichel breaks first 1,000-mile barrier

The temperatures in New York has slowed William Sichel’s progress in the Sri Chinmoy Road Race.

Two successive days of 58.7 miles has seen ultra-marathon runner William Sichel break the 1,000-mile milestone in the Sri Chinmoy 3,100-mile Road Race in New York.

Battling searing temperatures, Sichel has reached 1,100.8 miles after 19 days.

Sichel, who became the oldest finisher of the world’s longest road race in 2014, spoke this week of the effect the 35-40 degree heat was having on his performance.

He said: “If its 35 and under, I’m ok, but if it’s over 35, it’s significantly impacting on my performance to the extent I’m not making the 60 miles a day.”

The 64-year-old also added his joy and gratitude at the support received from Orkney through social media and other forms.
