Stromness end 29 year wait for Parish Cup glory

IMG_1947a

Stromness have won their first Parish Cup since 1986, beating Holm 2-0 at Pickaquoy this evening.

Holm went into the game as favourites but, after a closely fought opening period, Stromness took the lead through their captain, Ryan McFerran.

A deflected ball from Ross Slater found its way fortuitously to McFerran, who turned and swept the ball high past Robbie Thomson to hand Stromness the initiative.

Holm, with several county players in their ranks, squeezed Stromness back into their own half but were finding clear-cut chances hard to come by. Stromness were superbly organised and had ten players behind the ball, Holm just couldn’t find a way through them.

After a second half that swung back and fore, Stromness were awarded a penalty on 70 minutes. A long free kick was sent in and, after a stramash, referee Robbie Norquoy pointed to the penalty spot. Ross Slater stepped up and calmly sent Thomson the wrong way to send Stromness fans delirious.

Holm pushed hard for a way back into the game, passing up several chances, but in the end, Stromness held out comfortably to record a Parish Cup victory.
