Students take the lead in college open day

ocopenday
A new administration course at Orkney College UHI has allowed students to organise the facility’s annual open day for the first time.

As a result, the students have taken a different approach from previous years by providing taster sessions in different departments, having food available made by the hospitality department, and offering tours of the campus.

Kayleigh Downes, one of the organising students, explained: “We’re trying to make the open day a bit different this year by offering taster sessions from different courses that the college offers. We’ve been looking at how to organise it from the point of view of other students. What we as students ourselves would’ve liked to see take place on an open day and how we can make it more interactive for prospective students. We also want people to have the opportunity to speak to current students and to get a first-hand example of what it’s like to study at the college.”

Some of the hands on taster sessions that will be available are working with bones in the archaeology department and getting a crash course in first aid in the care department. Other departments that are offering sessions are art, IT, hospitality and business studies although there will be representatives and information available from all departments within the college.

The open day takes place on Friday, November 6, from noon until 5:30pm.

The day is open to all prospective students or anyone interested in Orkney College UHI and what programmes are on offer including college courses, degrees and masters courses. Taster sessions will need to be booked in advance by Thursday, 5 November at 1pm as spaces are limited.
