Surface dressing update

Today, Tuesday, OIC will be continuing surface dressing in the Bay of Skaill/Skara Brae area, on the B9056 between the B9057 (the Loch of Skaill) and Quoyloo Road.

The official diversion will be signed and is via Quoyloo Road, onto the A967 and then onto the B9055 (the ‘Queena to Aithe road’).

The morning’s roadworks will affect public bus service 8S – Kirkwall – Stromness – Skara Brae. The bus will not serve Skara Brae, Marwick, Quoyloo and Birsay Hostel.

Once the Bay of Skaill B9056 section is completed, the team will move later in the day to the B9055 in Sandwick, which will be closed to traffic between its junction with the A967 at Queena and its junction with the B9057 near Aith. A signed diversion will be in place via Quoyloo Road, then onto the A967 as far as the B9056 junction near the Yesnaby turnoff. There is no impact on public bus services.

Full details of how bus services are affected including route changes are available on the council website.

A general reminder that:

  • Roads will be closed in both directions while surface dressing is being carried out, with closures in place from as early as 6am and as late as 6pm.
  • School transport buses will be escorted through the work sites.
  • Public buses will be permitted through work sites during peak hours only (before 9.30am and after 4pm).
  • Roads will be closed to all other traffic, with the exception of emergency vehicles.
