Traffic restrictions for roundabout work

Drivers are advised to look out for diversions in Kirkwall from Monday, to allow surfacing work at the new roundabout being constructed at the junction of New Scapa Road, the Holm Branch Road and the new Scapa Link Road.

During this phase of the project, the Holm Branch Road will be closed at its junction with Scapa Crescent.

Meanwhile, New Scapa Road will be closed at the other end of Scapa Crescent near Garden House. Scapa Crescent itself will remain open to traffic and access will be maintained to Garden House.

Drivers heading towards Kirkwall past the Highland Park Distillery will follow a signed diversion along the Holm Road, Bignold Park Road and the Clay Loan.

The diversion for drivers heading in the Holm direction from Kirkwall will be up the Clay Loan, along Bignold Park Road and the Holm Road.

Drivers are also advised that the section of New Scapa Road leading to Scapa beach from the Holm Branch Road junction remains closed, as it has been since the start of the roundabout construction work. The alternative route to Scapa beach from the Old Scapa Road is signposted.

Darren Richardson, Orkney Islands Council’s head of roads and environmental services, said: “These restrictions are expected to be in place for around five days, until the surfacing work is completed.

“The road closures and diversions are needed to allow the work to be carried out as safely as possible.

“I would like to thank drivers and residents for their co-operation and apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused.”

Throughout this period a temporary footway will be in place to provide access to the Crantit Trail.
