Tributes have been paid following the death of the former vice-convener of Orkney Islands Council, Jim Sinclair.

The flag above the main council offices in Kirkwall will fly at half-mast from tomorrow morning as a mark of respect.

Jim Sinclair served as an elected member of the council from 1981 to 2007, representing Shapinsay and latterly Shapinsay and Kirkwall Harbour.

He was appointed vice-convener in 1994 and performed this role for the council over a ten-year period.

During his time as a councillor, he also served as chairman of the services, transportation, and harbours and ferries committees.

“This is a sad day for all who knew Jim,” said OIC vice-convener, Councillor Jim Foubister.

“Jim will be remembered for his wisdom and humour, and as a strong and effective advocate for Shapinsay, for Orkney and for the council itself. He cared deeply for our community and that shone through his many years of service as a councillor and as the council’s vice-convener.

“I would like to express all of our sympathies to Jim’s family and his many friends in the wider agricultural community.”
