Bill Murray + Jan Vogler

June 17, 2018 7:00 pm

Imagine that an iconic film star is planning to visit Orkney. And that this film legend invites a small audience to spend an evening with him and three of his friends, sharing their favourite music, songs, poetry and prose.

Now imagine the film legend is none other than Bill Murray — star of Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, and Lost in Translation, to mention but a few — and his friends are premier cello soloist Jan Vogler, virtuoso violinist Mira Wang, and renowned pianist Vanessa Perez. If you managed to conjure up this extraordinary event in your mind’s eye, you have just imagined the New Worlds show. And it’s coming to Stromness Town Hall, for one night only, this Sunday, June 17.

Firth Gala Weekend

June 17, 2018

It will be an exciting few days out in Firth, as the local community association presents the parish’s annual Gala Weekend.

The fun and festivities start tonight, Friday, with a Children’s Walking Treasure Hunt. With groups meeting at the Firth football pitch carpark at 6.30pm for a start at 7pm.

Local band, Bad Apple, will also be playing in the Pomona Inn from 9.30pm.

Then, tomorrow will see a day packed full of excitement, with local clubs fundraising in the hall from 12-3pm, followed by sports, starting at 2pm — including the infamous north vs south tug of war.

In the evening, there will be a fancy dress parade from the Pomona Inn to the hall, led by Kirkwall City Pipe Band. Competitors will be gathering at the Pomona green at 6.45pm. At 10.30pm, the Gala Dance will begin with music from Wayward.

The weekend will be rounded off, quite aptly, with Parish team rounders at Firth Community Centre. Teams to gather at 2pm for a 2.30pm start.
