Whit’s on this weekend?
At a loss for what to do this weekend? Have no fear! The Orcadian is here with a few peedie suggestions on what to get up to over the next few days…
Electric Mother — Bloodstock or Bust, The Auld Motorhoose, Kirkwall
Orkney’s own metal five-piece, Electric Mother, will soon be embarking their furthest ever trip, to their biggest gig yet.
Scheduled to play the Jagermeister stage at Bloodstock Open Air Festival, later this month, the band will be playing alongside heavy metal favourites such as Megadeath, Ghost, and Amon Amarth.
But before they head off to Derbyshire, next weekend, they will be warming up their musical engine with a gig at their home venue, The Auld Motorhoose, Kirkwall, this Saturday, August 4.
Starting at 10pm, the group hope that the support of their home fans will give them the final boost they need to go and blast their audience away and show them what Orkney has to offer.
Sanday Show and East Mainland Show
Orkney’s shows season officially kicked off this morning with the Sanday Show.
With the 120th East Mainland Show set to take place tomorrow, Saturday, this weekend marks the beginning of a week-long series of agricultural events.
Show season brings fun for all the family, with fun activities and stalls hosted by local groups and businesses, as well as Orkney produce on sale for when you get a bit peckish.
Auld Hat — New Heids, The Reel, Kirkwall
A Scottish folk supergroup will be entertaining the crowd at The Reel, Kirkwall, this evening, Friday.
After a successful visit to the county, last summer, Auld Hat — New Heids have returned with their blend of 1960s and 70s traditional folk.
Tonight will be their second performance of the week, played at The Reel last night as well.
Fernvalley Wildlife Centre, Rendall
As show season kicks off, folk from all over the county will be flocking to the various agricultural show to see livestock, poultry, dogs, and other animals. But this weekend will also see a selection of animals of a rather more exotic variety go on display.
Tomorrow, Saturday, Fernvalley Wildlife Centre in Tingwall near Rendall will open its doors for the first time. With a variety of reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals, the centre will be giving visitors and locals a chance to see some animals that you wouldn’t normally be able to see in Orkney.
Sea and Sky, Northlight Studio, Stromness
Last Saturday saw the opening of the latest exhibition at the Northlight Gallery, Stromness.
Sea Sky, an Exhibition of drawings, prints and textile pieces by Alison Clark, brings together shoreline and sky based on the Orkney landscape with focus on the island of Westray.
Alison bases her artwork on documenting coastal landscapes through painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and textile installations. She draws inspiration from historical collections of seaweed and seashells, exploring the relationship between choice of drawing and printing medium and how the works are displayed.
The show in Northlight is designed to give an introduction to her work, and will be open until Friday, August 11.
Dance-a-thon, St Magnus Cathedral and Kirk Green
St Magnus Cathedral and Kirk Green will play host to a Dance-a-thon, this Sunday, August 6.
Starting at 3pm there will be a host of fun activities including a lucky dip, bakes sale, guess the teddy’s birthday and face painting, as well as a dance along session, all in aid of United Through Sport and other charities.
