Anniversary celebration at Stromness Golf Club
Stromness Golf Club’s 125th anniversary celebrations step up a gear today, with the Annniversary Open competition.
The guest of honour is George Macgregor OBE, the captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, and former professional golfer Ronnie Macaskill, who is secretary of Royal Aberdeen Golf Club.
Stromness’s first golf course was a short nine-hole course on the natural links at Warebeth, and had a membership of around 130.
In November, 1923, Ness farm was bought, and work began on what is now part of the current course. It opened for business in 1924, with visitor Dr McNish playing the first ball from the newly-made first tee.
