Author hoping Orkney folk will share their favourite walks

Former senior producer at Radio Orkney, John Fergusson  is heading back to the county in April to research a new book on walks in Orkney.

John, who lived in Harray from 1987 until 2009, is returning after being commissioned to compile a guide to the best walks in Orkney. But before heading north again, John is hoping Orkney folk will share some of their favourites with him.

“We’re still trying to work out which routes should be included in the guide,” he said. “And we’re keen to make sure we feature the walks that the local people believe visitors will most enjoy.

“I’ll be walking every yard of every route in the book. I’d love to get suggestions from people about less well-known paths and tracks, particularly in the North and South Isles.

“While not forgetting about the ‘must do’ routes, like the Old Man of Hoy and the Westness Walk, it would be good to be able to point visitors towards great walks which haven’t been published elsewhere.”

John will begin walking the routes in April, and he is keen to hear from anyone who has a particular favourite which they believe is not well known.

He can be contacted by email at orkneywalks@gmail.com.
