Become Orkney’s new MSYP: still time to get your nomination in!
Young people interested in standing as one of Orkney’s two representatives on the Scottish Youth Parliament still have time to register their nominations before the deadline on Friday.
Ernie Skea, Orkney’s SYP Elections Co-ordinator, said: “We have already had quite a bit of interest from young folk, with five nominations already registered.
Ruairidh White, is one of Orkney’s two present MSYPs, having been in the role since April 2011: “It’s a really good thing to be have been part of, and a one off opportunity to experience everything that the role of a Young Member of the Scottish Parliament involves.
“I would encourage other young people to put themselves forward for it”, added Ruairidh.
Any young person aged between 14-25 is eligible to stand for election to represent Orkney at the Scottish Youth Parliament – as long as they live in Orkney and have an interest in their community and a passion for democracy.
“This is a great opportunity for two young folk from Orkney to take up both a local and national platform to voice their issues and those of their peers, to try and turn them into positive actions, and to influence decision makers”, concluded Ernie Skea.
After a period of training, between mid March and June, successful candidates will go on to represent Orkney as Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (MSYPs) for a two-year period.
