Come direct to us for call-blocking advice, says OIC trading standards

Orkney Islands Council is urging householders bothered by nuisance calls not to fall for over-the-phone offers for “call blocking” devices but to contact trading standards for help and advice.

Several Orkney residents have reported receiving cold-calls offering call-blocking technology. Typically anyone accepting these offers is charged in the region of £80 for the call-blocking device plus a monthly fee of several pounds.

Consumers who have bought the devices have complained about them being faulty, and of being unable to secure a refund after return or cancellation. They have also found it difficult to contact the businesses to complain.

Trading standards’ Alison Campbell said: “Anyone who is bothered by nuisance calls can contact trading standards for advice. We can point you onto reliable call blocker devices which are effective, easy to use, and with full after sales support and which are available for a one-off fee.

“We also have several of these devices available for a free trial period for vulnerable people in the community — so if you are worried about someone you know falling victim to scam calls, please get in touch.”

OIC’s trading standards team can be contacted on 873535 or by email at trading.standards@orkney.gov.uk.
