Consultation into replacement power cables

A three-day consultation, to discuss the replacement of three North Isles submarine power cables, gets under way in Kirkwall today, Tuesday.

According to Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD), the cables, which together measure 28km in length, are approaching the end of their operational life.

The cable landfalls are at:

  • Carness Bay (Mainland Orkney) to Point of Dishan (Shapinsay)
  • Bay of Linton (Shapinsay) to Bay of Holland (Stronsay) across the Stronsay Firth
  • Near Holm of Scockness (Rousay) to Point of Huro (Westray) across the Westray Firth

The events – in the St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall, today, Wednesday and Thursday – will detail the different cables and possible methods for their replacement. They will, said SHEPD, allow the public and statutory bodies to comment on the new cables’ routes and installation methods and to highlight any potential impacts that should be taken into consideration.

Work to install the new cables is due to begin in the spring of 2017.
