Councillors agree to 40mph speed limit around Hatston Park

A speed limit of 40mph is to be introduced on a stretch of the main Kirkwall to Stromness Road, covering an area alongside Orkney Golf Club and onwards past Hatston Park.

After discussions at the OIC development and infrastructure committee meeting today, councillors agreed to use their delegated powers are reduce the speed limit from 50mph to 40mph.

The councillors’ decision went against the recommendations of council officials, who had supported retaining the 50mph limit.

Residents in the area have been calling for a 40mph speed limit for a number of years.

Last year, they said that they felt that they were not being listened to by the council when the D&I committee knocked back a 40mph proposal in favour of the 50mph limit.
