Emphatic home win sends Orkney to the top of the table

Orkney RFC’s First XV trounced bottom placed Ellon today at the Pickaquoy Centre to move to the top of the BT Caledonia League Division One table.

A total of 15 tries, complimented by seven conversions gave the home side an 89-0 victory in front of a sizeable crowd.

Conditions underfoot were not ideal with a wet pitch making it hard for the players to keep their feet. Overhead, however, for the most part it remained bitterly cold, but largely dry allowing for, at times, some decent rugby to be played.

From the off Orkney were clearly the stronger team and went on to record their biggest ever victory against the Aberdeenshire based side.

The win catapults Orkney above both Glenrothes and Gordonians who were due to meet today, but their clash fell victim to the weather.
