Festival of the Horse and Boys’ Ploughing Match
The annual Festival of the Horse and Boys’ Ploughing Match will take place today, Saturday, in South Ronaldsay.
The parade of horses starts at the ‘Hope Community School at 3.30pm, followed by the ploughing match at the Sands O’ Wright at 5pm.
The “horses” — children dressed in decorated costumes — represent the old ploughing horses of days gone by, and the outfits are often passed down from generation to generation, as are the ploughs.
