Going under lock and key to mark Amnesty International Day

As part of a series of events to mark Amnesty International Day today, some well-known characters will go under lock and key to highlight the plight of those suffering human rights abuses across the planet.

From 11am today, Saturday, shoppers will be introduced to a new addition to Kirkwall’s Albert Street — a cage containing a series of plucky “prisoners”, including Alistair Carmichael MP, teacher Cameron Stout and poet Pam Beasant.

The day concludes with a lecture by Kate Allen, director of Amnesty International UK, in the King Street Halls, Kirkwall, entitled Amnesty International and the Struggle for Human Rights.

See this week’s The Orcadian for a full programme of events.
