Golspie’s title bid ends in entertaining draw
Orkney FC let a two-goal lead slip this afternoon but they still denied Golspie the opportunity for a play-off shot at the North Caledonian League title as the two teams fought out a 2-2 draw.
Only a victory would be enough for the away side to take the title into a play-off decider, and despite Golspie fighting back from two goals down, the result means that Halkirk are the 2015/16 North Caledonian League champions.
In what was a fairly entertaining first half played in damp conditions, Orkney finished the half with two goals in the last five minutes through Kyle Drever and Thorfinn Stout finishing off a fantastic flowing move.
Golspie’s championship bid appeared to be over but a headed Ally McLeod effort and a strike of the highest order from Shaun Kerr within five minutes of the restart gave the away side a lifeline and roared on by a group of vocal away supporters, the away side looked to be on course for a vital victory. Orkney, to their credit, regained a foothold in the match however with Chris Simpson and Thorfinn Stout both rattling the bar.
Despite throwing men forward in the closing stages, Golspie couldn’t force a dramatic winner.
