Groups urged to apply for winter weather support

Northern Isles MP Alistair Carmichael is calling on local charities and community groups to apply for a new fund which supports them during winter weather emergencies.

Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution has established a £300,000 Resilient Communities Fund to cover communities in the north of Scotland, including Orkney and Shetland. Applications up to £20,000 will be accepted until July 31. Non-profit making organisations, charities and community groups are all eligible.

The Resilient Communities Fund supports local projects that:

  • Protect the welfare of vulnerable customers during a significant power outage or emergency weather event.
  • Enhance community facilities and services that may be used or instigated in the event of a significant power outage or emergency weather event.
  • Improve communication during an emergency situation to keep communities informed or aid contact between local groups and response services.

Mr Carmichael said: “Extreme weather that results in long power outages is a constant problem for the Northern Isles and significantly affect the most vulnerable residents. Those in remote areas who find themselves at the mercy of the elements often have to deal with the problems with no support and are reliant on the assistance of their neighbours.

“This fund can help to make community facilities more resilient and prepared – whether through installing a new cooker or providing cold-weather kits for elderly residents. These are simple measures that can go a long way to helping those worst affected by a sudden extreme weather event.

“I would strongly encourage local groups to look at the funding that is provided by SHEPD and consider making an application before the deadline at the end of July.”
