Two projects to benefit in latest round of Energy Challenge Fund

Two Orkney projects are among 23 across Scotland to receive funding from second allocation made from the Scottish Government’s Local Energy Challenge Fund.

The Shapinsay Development Trust will receive £25,000 for Wind to Agri-Energy — a project that will use “spare”, curtailed electricity from Shapinsay’s community wind turbine to produce synthetic diesel suitable for farm transport and urea for use as fertiliser.

Also benefitting is the Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre Development Trust’s Heat Smart Orkney, which aims to use generation and demand management technology

Heat Smart Orkney aims to use Grid-smart Demand side management to create a community-led and delivered local energy economy which will help reduce carbon emissions, ease the pressure on the local grid, achieve higher turbine revenue and give communities better and more affordable heating.
