Helliar back on Pentland Firth route
The Serco NorthLink freight ship Helliar has again been put on the Stromness to Scrabster ferry route during the Hamnavoe refit period, which is taking place this week.
The move, when announced last year, saw Orkney MP Alistair Carmichael attacking the Scottish Government on the issue, as did Liam McArthur, who highlighted his concerns with the First Minister, due to lack of passenger capacity and accessibility issues. Stromness Community Council also raised concerns.
In a parliamentary answer to Mr McArthur back in November, Islands Minister, Paul Wheelhouse MSP confirmed that “a like for like replacement is not available” and that consequently the freight vessel would provide cover.
