HIAL announce concessions and exemptions to airport parking charges

HIAL has announced new concessions to the parking charges set to be introduced in July.

Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL) has announced new concessions and exemptions ahead of the introduction of airport car parking charges in July.

Blue badge holders are set to be able to park for free, while the airport authority also says it will work with the NHS to ensure those flying to and from medical appointments will also be exempt.

HIAL will also complement a compassionate travel policy already used by Loganair with free parking for passengers travelling under the terms of the policy, while free parking will also be available for inter-island travellers.

For residents of Eday, North Ronaldsay, Papa Westray, Westray, Sanday and Stronsay, one vehicle per household will be able to be registered as part of the scheme.

A free one-hour pick-up and drop-off period will also be extended to two hours to mitigate any flight delay.

The concessions and exemptions are as a result of a consultation period, where the company received “valuable feedback” from more than 500 users of the three affected airports — Kirkwall, Sumburgh and Stornoway.

HIAL managing director Inglis Lyon, said: “We have met and consulted with a range of stakeholders since we announced our intention to charge for parking in March, and from the outset of those discussions we were keen to listen to the views of the communities involved and reflect their views in the way the charges were implemented.”
