Lifeboat rescues entangled yacht

Kirkwall Lifeboat.
Kirkwall Lifeboat.
Kirkwall Lifeboat was called out this afternoon to rescue a yacht with five people onboard which was tangled in fishing gear off Shapinsay.

The lifeboat was launched at 3pm and headed to the scene to find the yacht Sula with a creel rope entangled in its propellor, half a mile west of the Gault Buoy, to the north-west of Shapinsay.

Because of the rope in the propellor, the yacht was stuck in the tide.

The rope was cut free, and the lifeboat, with coxswain Dougie Bain and six crew onboard, towed the vessel to Kirkwall, arriving alongside the marina at 4.20pm.

This was the third service for the lifeboat this year.
