Lyness oil tank plans move forward
Work to bring six wartime oil tanks at Lyness back into action should make some major progress early next year.
Banffshire-based Northern Oils has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Orkney Islands Council, paving the way for them to begin exploratory works on site over 12 months. This will include cleaning, early infrastructure works and checking the integrity of the tanks for leakage.
As part of their community engagement process, Northern Oils also intends to open the tanks at an appropriate juncture in the works plan for an open day to the public.
The company plans to develop the tanks into a modern-day fuel storage and distribution base for low sulphur marine gas oil.
