McArthur welcomes additional support for local beef farms
The Scottish Government has announced their plans for implementing the reformed Common Agricultural Policy (CAP). Orkney MSP Liam McArthur responded to the announcement, noting in particular the decision to introduce a coupled payment top-up for island farms of around €65 per calf.
He said: “For months, along with the local farming industry in Orkney, I have been highlighting to Richard Lochhead and his officials the specific challenges faced by our islands in terms of the new reforms.
“The real concern is that a loss of production could have direct consequences for farming in Orkney, with knock-on impacts across the supply chain as well as the wider economy and community.
“I am pleased, therefore, that the cabinet secretary has listened and agreed to introduce a top-up calf payment for island farmers. This is a sensible use of the additional resources made available by the UK Government in recognition of the specific needs of our islands.”
He added: “Given the breadth and complexity of the reform package, however, it will take some time to tease out the full implications of the announcement today. I will be speaking with the farming community locally over the coming weeks to make sure that any potential problems are identified as soon as possible. This will be important as the implementing regulations start to be drawn up.”
