McArthur: Young farmers will feel let down by government funding cut

Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has said that Young Farmers Clubs will feel “let down” by the Scottish Government’s decision to withdraw £66,000 in funding.

The Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs (SAYFC), which has over 3,500 members, has been hit with a £66,000 cut in Scottish Government funding.  The loss of financial support equates to a 13 per cent cut in annual income for the SAYFC.

The Orkney District Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs (ODAYFC) has over 100 members and is made up of three clubs — Harray, Sandwick and East Mainland.

SAYFC Chief Executive, Penny Montgomerie, has confirmed it is the first time in nearly 70 years that the association had not received any financial support at all from government.

Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has supported cross party calls in the Scottish Parliament for Ministers to reconsider the decision.

Commenting, Liam McArthur said: “The Scottish Government announcement to cut funding to Young Farmers Clubs has been met with surprise and disappointment.

“Young Farmers Clubs play an important role in developing skills and providing opportunities for young people in rural communities, including here in Orkney, where they are very active indeed. It is a worrying time for the SAYFC, as it looks to bridge the funding gap to ensure these opportunities for young people are not lost.

“Many will be feeling let down at the moment and I hope Ministers will reconsider their decision to completely withdraw grant support.”
