NHS Orkney’s director of public health has been appointed to two influential national posts with the Royal College of Physicians and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

Dr Louise Wilson has taken on the role of a remote and rural adviser for the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh. The appointment is for three years and it has a national remit as part of the network of UK based regional advisers.

Dr Wilson will chair a group of doctors training and working in more rural areas in the UK.

They will use their expertise to advise the Royal College of Physicians on policy and professional matters that affect medical staff in rural areas disproportionately or differently.

The group will cover wide ranging topics such as changes in medical training, reconfiguration of services, clinical commissioning, recruitment and retention.

Dr Wilson said: “As a public health physician and paediatrician I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with colleagues both locally and across the UK on the issues faced by physicians working in the remote and rural setting.”

The second appointment is as regional lead in Scotland for the Quality and Value Team of the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management (FMLM). Here she will lead a team of deputies promoting the quality improvement agenda, and represent the issues of Scottish members of the FMLM in helping deliver quality improvement schemes.
