No more free parking on Saturdays

Free parking in pay-and-display car parks in Kirkwall and Stromness on Saturday has come to an end.

Parking for free on Saturdays was introduced as a temporary measure over the winter months to encourage more shoppers to support town centre businesses.

After consulting with businesses in Kirkwall and Stromness, the OIC will re-introduce Saturday ticketing in pay and display car parks from Saturday, April 6.

“We hope that the free parking on Saturdays since the turn of the year encouraged shoppers to support town centre businesses over the winter months,” said Brian Archibald, the council’s head of transportation and amenities.

“As part of our ongoing review of parking, we would welcome feedback from the wider public on how much the free parking influenced their shopping habits.”

Views and ideas can be sent to the council’s development and infrastructure Service at  developmentandinfrastructure@orkney.gov.uk.

A full review of car parking arrangements in the two towns is underway. The results will be considered by councillors later this year.
