Online poll: Does Orkney have a problem with alcohol?
(Edit: Due to an issue with our previous voting system we ask that you resubmit your votes below.)
Up until recently, statistics covering 2010 to 2013 had shown that Orkney had the highest comparable rate of alcohol-related hospital admissions in Scotland — figures that were reported in the national press.
However, last month a local councillor who had been sceptical of the figures came forward at a meeting of the local licensing forum with a response from the body who published the information — the Information Services Division of the NHS — which told her the figures for Orkney had been skewed by a single individual, meaning they had not been representative of the county as a whole.
More recent figures show Orkney stands somewhere in the middle of the table for alcohol-related hospital admissions in Scotland, which representatives from NHS Orkney say shows the county does still face a serious problem with alcohol.
In an effort to gauge public opinion of the matter, we have set up an online poll (below) and would welcome your comments on our Facebook page. Please note that comments may be used for publication.
