Orkney Herring calls in the liquidator
Redundant staff from the Orkney Herring Company — which will go into liquidation in the near future after 25 years — have been asked to reinvest in the firm in a bid to restart a herring factory in Stromness.
Start-up capital of around £250,000 would be required to get a company going again, according to shareholder and director of the company, Susane Rontved, who is willing to invest further money into the business.
She also appealed for the wider Orkney public to invest.
Changes in the marketplace and limited room for the three producers in the UK market led to a cash flow problem. However, the company bosses are confident that they were about to break into the US market.
