Orkney upgraded to amber weather warning

Orkney has been upgraded to an amber weather warning by the Met Office, meaning that there could be some damage to properties and disruption to transport.

The Met Office have set an amber weather warning for Orkney, with winds of up to 90mph expected across the Northern Isles tomorrow, Thursday, as storm Caroline hits the UK.

According to forecasts, gusts of between 70mph and 80mph are expected to widely affect the region, with some damage to buildings possible. Longer journey times and cancellations are likely, with both Orkney Ferries and Northlink having issued early disruption warnings for Thursday and Friday.

The Met Office say there is also a good chance that power cuts may also occur. Large waves are expected and beach material may be thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties. Increasingly frequent and heavy snow showers are also expected throughout the day tomorrow.
