Orkney’s First XV back to winning ways against Caithness

Marcus Guthrie scored two tries in Orkney's 21-3 win earlier today.
Marcus Guthrie scored two tries and was one of Orkney’s standout performers in his team’s win against Caithness earlier today.

Orkney Rugby Club’s First XV claimed a 21-3 victory over Caithness at the Pickaquoy Centre, earlier today. The team were returning to BT Caledonia League Division One action after their last two matches had been called off.

The home side were strong defensively throughout the match and had to work hard to withstand a short period of Caithness pressure, after they had initially gone ahead 3-0, courtesy of a penalty.

Orkney’s class began to shine through as the match wore on and eventually the Caithness back-line was breached, when Marcus Guthrie went over for his first try of the afternoon. Phil Ross soon added his name to the try scorers list with Guthrie adding to his tally later on. Graham Poke converted all three tries from potentially tricky positions.

Orkney pushed late on but couldn’t quite get a fourth try to claim a bonus point.

Matthew Byers was named as the Orkney man of the match.
