Orkney’s new astronomical society is born
A group of amateur enthusiasts have set up the Orkney Astronomical Society.
At the helm is society chairman, Michael Sinclair, of Kirkwall, a 26-year-old who has been passionate about celestial objects for the past 16 years.
With the help of Rousay-based astronomer, John Vetterlein, the pair decided to form the society, which now has 17 members, but they are keen for others to come on board.
Michael said they aim to provide a good knowledge base to anyone who wants to learn about astronomy, and to promote astronomy around Orkney.
The first society meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 20, from 9pm-10pm, in the King Street Halls in Kirkwall, and is open to anyone.
