Orkney’s police start using Twitter
Orkney’s police service have started using Twitter at the web address https://twitter.com/OrkneyPolice.
Police Scotland say the Orkney Twitter feed will help engage with the public around local policing issues, including raising awareness of the multi-member ward plans which are in place in Orkney and Scotland, providing public information and appealing for information in relation to crime appeals.
Chief Inspector Les Donaldson, Orkney area commander, said: “Twitter is just one of the ways in which my officers, the public and partners can work together and engage to help make the communities of Orkney even safer. Already we have 155 followers and we hope this will increase as we move on.”
The Twitter feed will not be monitored 24/7 and police stress that it is not a viable way to report crime — 999 remains the emergency phone number, with 101 to be called in non-emergency situations.
