‘Paintings’ opens at the Orkney Museum

clare-gee_Untitled-2015An exhibition of paintings by local artist Clare Gee opens at the Orkney Museum today, Saturday.

Simply titled Paintings, the exhibition runs until March 26.

Clare said: “My interest in painting is all about the materials, and celebrating paint and painting in its purest form. I often work on several pieces at the same time, and I have no idea when I start what is going to come out.

“Motifs and colours repeat, and mean a lot to me. They come subconsciously from things that are important around me – architecture, archaeology, landscape and nature – but are not depicted in their usual context or reality.”

She added: “I work on multiple pieces at the same time, and work in short bursts so have as much time away from the works as I do with them, coming back with a fresh eye each time, and working without thinking too much about the next layer.

“I like to challenge myself in some way with each set of works. That can take the form of restricting the materials used, or the timescale they will be made within. The bulk of the work shown here are restricted in the paint used.”
