Pedestrian access opened on Eday pier

Pedestrian access to the pier in Eday is set to be restored this afternoon.

This follows an engineering assessment of the damage caused to the approach road and sea wall by weekend storms.

Gavin Barr, Orkney Islands Council’s Executive Director of Development and Infrastructure, said: “With the damaged area safely cordoned off, pedestrians will be able to access to the pier, enabling foot passengers to travel by ferry and for light goods to be delivered and brought ashore.

“Meanwhile, plans for repair work are being put in place, with the aim of getting the pier fully operational, for vehicles as well as passengers, as soon as possible.”

Orkney Ferries plan to provide a passenger-only service to Eday later this afternoon, Monday.
