Police issue speed warning

Police in Kirkwall have issued a warning to drivers to slow down in the Twatt area of the West Mainland.

A spokesman said that the speed limit through the area was reduced last year from 60 mph to 40 mph but many drivers have not changed their driving behaviour accordingly.

He added: “We want to remind drivers of the current speed limit and make it clear that we are monitoring the situation and will take appropriate action against offenders; the penalty is a £100 fine and three driving licence penalty points.

“The message we want to promote is that all drivers are expected to comply with speed limits and we are actively enforcing the law because this is the single most effective measure we can take to keep our roads safe.”
