Power cuts across Orkney Mainland and South Isles

Scottish Hydro Electic Power Distribution (SHEPD) has reported that around 700 homes in Orkney are without power, with the majority of faults thought to be due to lightning strikes.

SHEPD say the worst affected areas are in Birsay, Orphir and South Ronaldsay.

A spokesman said engineers are working as fast as they can to restore power. Although engineers initially faced problems getting across the Churchill Barriers, which were closed due to the weather conditions, they are now working on South Ronaldsay.
