Progress, but room for improvement, at Stromness Primary School
Stromness Primary School has made some progress following an HMIE inspection in January, but there is still room for improvement, members of the OIC’s education and leisure services committee will hear next week.
Following the inspectors’ findings earlier this year, councillors asked for an interim progress report, addressing the main areas for improvement identified.
The committee will hear that an OIC education service review found that the school has made some progress towards achieving all the targets in the main areas for improvement identified in the report. Staff are working to meet children’s learning needs more effectively but acknowledge further improvements are still needed in this area.
The review team reported that a series of staffing changes at the school have had an impact on almost all year groups. Parents who took part in the review expressed concern over the uncertainty the combination of changes has introduced – including the use of temporary contracts for a number of staff.
Staff from the wider local authority team will continue to work with the school, ahead of the anticipated visit of inspectors in the new year.
