Research grant to study Orkney and Shetland dialects

Dr. Ragnhild Ljosland, from the Centre for Nordic Studies, has been awarded a research grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council to carry out a project on the Orkney and Shetland dialects.

The project is a scoping study aiming to lay the foundations for developing a corpus database of Orkney and Shetland dialect texts, which will be a resource available to anyone wishing to do linguistic research on these dialects.

The project will also establish a network of researchers interested in the Orkney and Shetland dialects, in order to discuss what questions relating to these dialects are currently under-researched.
