School roof to be repaired following shattered panel
After a pane of glass crashed to the floor last September, repairs to the Stromness Academy foyer roof are due to begin in July.
According to OIC, the work will be completed during the school holidays, and see a full refurbishment of the secondary school’s atrium roof, with all the existing glazing removed and replaced with energy-efficient panes.
The glass panel fell after pupils had gone home for the day and there were no injuries.
Why the pane of glass fell last September has never been made clear and James Wylie, Orkney Islands Council’s Head of Education and Improvement, said this week that is it still not known for certain why it happened.
Work is due to commence on July 5 and finish before August 21 at a cost ranging from £150,000 to £200,000.
