St Magnus pilgrimage route logo unveiled

The organisers of the new St Magnus Way have unveiled its new logo.

This follows the decision by the Orkney LEADER Local Action Group to provide funding towards the installation of the 51-mile pilgrimage route.

The route will be launched in stages over 2017, as part of a year of events marking the 900 years since the martyrdom of Magnus Erlendsson.

The logo itself was designed by Iain Ashman, in Stromness, and will be used to waymark the route as well as in print, online and on interpretation boards.

Funding for the design of the logo is part of the LEADER funding, which comes from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, and is in two phases.

The first phase, initiated on February 15, provides match funding of £9,696.04 for the St Magnus Way logo, website, smartphone app and leaflet. The second, dependant on finalising relevant permissions, match funds the stone waymarkers and interpretation boards to the tune of £8,562.60.

These amounts are matched by funding from the Church of Scotland, local Community Councils, the Scottish Society for the Promotion of Christian Knowledge and the Friends of St Magnus, all of whom have been very enthusiastic about the project.
