Stromness Shopping Week officially underway

Despite a damp start to the proceedings, a sizeable crowd turned out this morning to see the official opening of Stromness Shopping Week, 2016.

Shopping Week committee member, Kris Bevan paid tribute to long-serving chairwoman, Isabel Wishart who steps down this year after 15 years in the role. He then handed over to guest speaker, Janette Park who gave the official opening speech.

Mrs Park praised the entrepreneurial spirit in Stromness, before the new queen, Taylah Spence was crowned by last year’s queen, Rachel Wood.

The ceremony marks the launch of a packed programme of events for the town, culminating on Saturday with the grand fireworks display by the Islesburgh Pyrotechnics Display Club, and the final song of Shopping Week 2016, by resident band, Midas Touch.
