Tankerness resident jailed for rape and assault
A former Nottinghamshire teacher, who now lives in Orkney, has been jailed for 17-and-a-half years.
Roger Caffrey, 70, of Tankerness, appeared at Nottingham Crown Court to face charges against seven victims.
After a three-week trial, Caffrey was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault relating to five girls under 14, five counts of indecent assault and two counts of rape against one girl aged under 14 and one count of rape against a female over 16.
The offences happened between 1978 and 1994.
According to Nottinghamshire Police, all but one of the offences took place when he was deputy head at Northgate Primary School in Nottingham and in several cases the offences were committed during lesson time.
DC Rob Smith, who investigated the case, said: “Caffrey was in a position of trust and authority, a position which he abused by subjecting a number of young girls to sexual abuse.
“The victims in this case have shown incredible fortitude in coming forward to give their evidence, no doubt Caffrey believed that he would be able to put his past behind him, but as with many similar cases recently it has been shown that passage of time is no hindrance to justice taking its course.
“I would encourage anyone who has suffered similar abuse to speak to us, no matter who the abuser was or how long ago it took place.”
